The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi is the garment used for practicing BJJ. This Gi (uniform) shares characteristics with the Judo Gi as it comes from it, but being Jiu Jitsu a sport that develops on the ground and through grips, the Jiu Jitsu gi has developed its own particularities that we will see below.
As we have said, when choosing your gi for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) you must take into account that they are different from gis of other martial arts: they are thicker, fit closer to the body and are made with a more resistant material.

The fabric (or weave in English) is the main aspect to consider when choosing a gi for BJJ. The type of fabric used determines the weight, thickness and resistance of the gi. They can be basically classified into the groups: single weave, double weave and gold weave, plus their variants.
The short answer is no. The weight of the fabric plus the reinforcements of knees, lapels and other points that suffer frequent tension in Jiu Jitsu make necessary the purchase of a BJJ gi. A Judo gi would break after a few uses on the mat. On the other hand, the fit of the BJJ gi to the body avoids being grabbed too easily by the opponent. A looser fitting gi like the Judo places you at a disadvantage for combat.

The usual colors in BJJ gi are white, blue and black.
