At RoninWear, we offer a wide selection of mouthguards for boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA, Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and many other contact sports.
A good mouthguard is a minimal investment to protect your dental health, jaw, and lips from impacts, preventing serious injuries and costly treatments.
The mouthguard is a fundamental piece of safety equipment, as important as a boxing helmet. Its use is vital in both combat and training/sparring.
In addition to protecting your teeth and gums from direct blows, it helps keep your jaw firm, preventing fractures and concussions.
Over time, using it also helps you adapt to breathing with your mouth closed under fatigue, a crucial aspect of performance.
There are two main types of mouthguards:
Simple mouthguards: These are the most popular and comfortable. They are placed on the upper teeth, facilitating breathing and allowing you to talk and even drink water.
Double mouthguards: These offer protection for both the upper and lower jaw, keeping it more stable. Although they provide greater security, they can be more uncomfortable and make breathing difficult, so they are usually chosen by professionals or in very high-impact situations.
In terms of size, there are mouthguards for children (generally up to 10 or 12 years old) and mouthguards for adults. Most mouthguards are moldable to the shape of your teeth for a perfect fit.
Moldable gel mouthguards adapt to your mouth for a personalized and secure fit. The procedure is simple, although it's vital to follow the specific instructions of each manufacturer, as times may vary. Generally, the steps are:
Boil water in a pot.
Prepare a separate container with room-temperature water (neither cold nor hot).
Introduce the mouthguard into the boiling water for the indicated time (e.g., 20-30 seconds).
Remove the mouthguard and introduce it into the cold water for a few seconds (e.g., 5-10 seconds).
Place it in your mouth, bite firmly, and press with your fingers on your teeth from back to front, both outside and inside (palate and gums), so it molds to your shape.
Submerge the mouthguard in cold water again for about 30 seconds to solidify.
If the adaptation isn't perfect, you can repeat the process, but we recommend following the steps in the instructions of the mouthguard you've chosen to ensure everything goes well the first time. And, of course, if you have any questions about this process, please consult us.
To extend the life of your mouthguard, wash it with lukewarm water after each use and, occasionally, submerge it in alcohol-free mouthwash to eliminate bacteria.
Store it in its ventilated case without bending it and avoid exposing it to heat or direct sunlight to prevent deformation.
